Optometrist Definitions to frequently asked questions:
Cones- Cells located in the retina that help you see clearly and see in color.
Cornea- Clear front covering of the eye; all light must pass through it.
Farsighted-When a person can see things far away but has difficulty seeing things close up.
Iris- Colored part of the eye; it opens and closes to let in just the right amount of light.
Lens- A clear curve-shaped tissue that focuses light onto the retina.
Macula- The small area on the retina that helps us see clearly when light is focused on it.
Nearsighted- When a person can see things near but can't see things far away.
Optic Nerve- A nerve on the back part of the eye that sends light signals from the rods and cones to the brain.
Optometrist- An eye doctor that examines eyes to make sure that they are healthy and that you are seeing clearly.
Retina-Light sensitive layer on the inside of the eye.
Rods- Cells located in the retina that help you see in the dark and see motion.
Sclera- The white outside layer of the eye that helps keep its shape.
